Trees to 40 m tall; trunk to 1 m d.b.h.; bark gray or dark gray, flaking; branchlets initially light brown or grayish yellow, turning brownish gray in 2nd or 3rd year, puberulent or glabrous; winter buds globose or ovoid, resinous. Leaves ascending on upper side of branchlets, pectinately arranged in 2 lateral sets on lower side, bright green adaxially, linear, 1.5-3 cm × 2-2.5 mm, stomatal lines in 2 white bands abaxially, resin canals 2, marginal, margin revolute, apex emarginate or obtuse. Seed cones shortly stalked, slightly glaucous, ovoid-cylindric or shortly cylindric, 6-11 × 3-4.5 cm. Seed scales at middle of cones flabellate-trapeziform, 1.4-2 × 1.6-2.4 cm, margin auriculate laterally. Bracts cuneate-obovate, apex broadly rounded, shortly cuspidate, cusp slightly exserted, reflexed, acute. Seeds narrowly ellipsoid, 1.3-1.6 cm including black-brown, cuneate wing.
